Kick the Salt Habit

  • Soulistic Well-Being LLC Fond du Lac, WI, 54937 United States (map)

Be aware of the sodium you are eating, excess sodium increases blood pressure, puffiness and strain on the heart!

This challenge will help you focus on the sodium in your diet. The American Heart Association recommends no more than 2,300 milligrams (mgs) a day and an ideal limit of no more than 1,500 mg per day for most adults, especially for those with high blood pressure. Even cutting back by 1,000 mg a day can improve blood pressure and heart health.  Oct 31, 2016

•        In 2 weeks you can: change your sodium palate

•        In 2 weeks you can: reduce bloating and puffiness

•        There is a direct relationship between sodium intake and blood pressure.

•        Your body only needs 200 mg sodium daily, but the average American consumes over 3000 mg daily.

Most of the sodium we eat (75%) comes from processed food we buy at the grocery store or at a restaurant. You will learn about the “Salty Six” for the worst offenders and make substitutions or eliminate them from your diet.

Focus on eating anything labeled with less than 140 mg sodium per serving is considered low sodium.

Learn about and get tips on sodium: Like, did you know Sea salt and kosher salt have the same sodium content as table salt. It’s all marketing people!

How to participate in this healthy habits challenge:

1. Slowly eliminate (or cut cold turkey) the “Salty Six” from your diet by following the simple weekly steps.

2. Track your sodium consumption daily for 3 weeks in mg or the 21 days of this challenge.
