The Broccoli Test

Many times when we are “hungry” we mindlessly eat something. Then a cycle, of regret, shame, eat more and give in continues. Last week I blogged about bringing God into the equation, enlisting His help to resist temptation. Here’s another quick tip to help create a mindful pause when reaching for food.

The broccoli test.

If you don’t like broccoli substitute an apple or a carrot.

Ask yourself "would I eat broccoli right now?"

If you answer "yes" then you are physically hungry. Go ahead and eat. If you answer "no" then you're emotionally hungry. You are not actually hungry for food.

You may also be thirsty, when we graze in the pantry or cupboards, it is a sign on thirst. You will never find the “thing” you are hungry for, it is actually water you need. Grab some water and get in tune with your body’s thirst.

Many times, we fail to PAUSE, and ask ourselves, do I really need this? (fill in the blank).  This test can help you identify emotional eating, impulse or mindless eating, or thirst. It can help you break the cycle of eat, shame, repeat.

It’s really simple, but it can be the best way to stop the cycle of mindless eating and really make good, better and best choices.

Post a pic of broccoli in your areas of temptation. The pantry, frig, cupboards, snack drawer, break room at work or your car visor. Give yourself a “cue” and a mental sticky note to increase the probability of changing your old mindless habit and breaking the cycle. Be aware of your triggers and the places that tempt you.
